ATV Safety Institute Again Offers Free ATV Safety Training

The ATV Safety Institute will provide free rider training for the second straight year during ATV Safety Week this spring. The ASI is again working with partners across America who will be volunteering to provide free ATV RiderCourses and other safety education June 6–14.
“The first step toward safe ATV riding is taking the ASI RiderCourse, and we’re making it available to adults, kids and families all over the country early in the riding season,” said Cam Arnold, ASI’s vice president of rider training. “ATV Safety Week is about promoting the eight Golden Rules for safe riding, and we can think of no better way than to offer our class at no charge to participants. We invite everyone with an ATV to meet our Instructors, have some fun, and learn how to ride ATVs safely.”
The ATV RiderCourse is free for anyone who meets the age requirements and signs up during ATV Safety Week. Riders can find the closest training sites by going to ATVSafety.org and clicking on the ATV Safety Week logo. Additional locations will be added as they are confirmed and the most current list can be found on the training page. Riders should then call 800-887-2887 to sign up for a class.
According to Consumer Product Safety Commission data, 92 percent of all ATV-related fatalities are the result of warned-against behaviors, such as youth riding on adult-sized ATVs. During ATV Safety Week, riders can learn about the proper operation of their machine, find out about helmets and other protective gear, and learn ways to dramatically reduce risk.
The ATV RiderCourse is also free year-round for anyone who has purchased a new, qualifying ATV from an ATV Safety Institute member company. The ASI also offers a free E-Course, which is available online 24/7. This online course is available in three age-specific courses for adults, teens and children. Students learn how to apply the Golden Rules of ATV riding in an interactive setting. The E-Course includes videos, pictures and games to make it a fun and effective learning experience for all ages. After finishing the course, users can take an ATV safety exam and receive a certificate of completion.
The ATV Safety Institute's Golden Rules
1. Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
2. Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law – another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.
3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
5. Ride an ATV that's right for your age.
6. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
8. Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. Visit ATVsafety.org or call 800.887.2887.
The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute® develops rider training programs and promotes the safe and responsible use of ATVs. The ASI® works to reduce crashes and injuries resulting from improper ATV use. Formed in 1988, the ASI is a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America®. For safety information or to enroll in the ATV RiderCourse nearest you, visit atvsafety.org or call (800) 887-2887.

Chris Robinson Takes Round 8 and Seals 2014 TORN Utility Championship on his Scrambler XP 1000 EPS

11/24/2014

Round 8 of the Texas Off-Road Nationals (TORN) would see Team UXC Racer Chris Robinson take the win and seal the Utility Quad Championship on his Scrambler XP 1000 EPS.

The race would see some stiff competition with eight utility quads lined up to tackle the 5-mile course. Robinson would jump off the line in second and by mile one, take the lead. He would hold the lead for the next two laps, get passed for a short amount of time, and then regain the lead to take the win and championship.

Picture
“The Polaris Scrambler XP 1000 EPS was solid and my Custom Axis Suspension along with my Fasst Company Flexx Bars soaked up the choppy filed sections that were full of acceleration and braking pumps. The Maxxis Ceros tires provided great traction and stable cornering on the off camber hill climbs,” said Robinson. “I would like to thank all of my sponsors and looking forward to a strong 2015 season.”

“We would like to congratulate Chris on bringing home the first championship for the Scrambler XP 1000,” said Donna Beadle, race team manager for Polaris. “Chris has worked hard all season and has been a great asset to the team.”

Team UXC Racing heads south to Ensenada, Mexico for the 47th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. The team is leading the Sportsman Quads Class in points for the series and looks to have a solid Baja 1000.

ITP Racers Capture Six ATV MX National Championships

Team Earns Eight Wins, More Than 20 podiums at Series Finale

Team ITP racers won eight classes, tallied 21 podiums and officially wrapped up six class championships at the finale of the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship series held in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.   "We had a big weekend at Loretta's in Tennessee, winning several classes and earning almost two-dozen podiums. More importantly, Jeffrey Rastrelli captured the Pro-Am championship with an impressive double-moto sweep and four other racers took home five amateur class titles," said Pat McGuire, Public Relations / Race Support. "Josh Creamer also proved ITP tires are versatile and offer lots of traction even in poor conditions. He grabbed the holeshot and second-moto victory in the Pro class on Saturday, despite the horribly muddy track. It was a good way to end the year."

Picture
The Can-Am Dirt Days event was held in high humidity at the popular Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch MX facility, which was soaked by intermittent rain showers. Seventeen Pro and Pro-Am racers competed on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. With the Pro class already determined at the previous round, the focus shifted to finishing strong for the top pilots of Team ITP. And because the Pro-Am class and some of the amateur class championships were still too close to call, the fans and racers were both glued to fences.  Josh Creamer (BCS Performance / Can-Am / ITP) has had a challenging season, but looked to end the year on a high note. The former national champion did just that as he earned his first podium of the season with a stellar 4-1 moto scorecard. The moto two win (and holeshot) was his first in nine rounds. In fact, in addition to being a big confidence builder the win was impressive because Creamer dominated on soggy track. He ended up finishing sixth place in the Pro class standings.
Picture
Finishing one spot behind Creamer in the season standings was Jeffrey Rastrelli (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am / ITP). Rastrelli made huge strides this year in the Pro class, having earned his first podium at round seven, but took ninth at Loretta's. He was sixth in moto one, but finished outside the top 10 in moto two due to a crash. However, on the season, he notched seven top-10 finishes and placed in the top-five four times. Rastrelli also earned the 2014 Pro-Am class championship with an impressive 1-1 moto sweep at Loretta's. The Tennessee win was his third in the class this year. He ended up winning by 18 points.
Picture
Sean Taylor (Root River Racing / Motowoz / ITP) and Silas Lamons (Jay Huckabey Racing / Suzuki / ITP) both competed in the Pro ranks at round nine. Taylor scored his best finish of the year with sixth overall (9-6), to capture the No. 10 spot in the final point standings. He also scored a third-place podium finish in the Pro-Am division to earn fourth for the year. Lamons took 12th (13-11) in the Pro class.
Picture
Amateur class racers notched seven wins at the finale for Team ITP. Dylan Tremellen (RRR / Rage ATV / FTR / Motowoz / ITP) won the Production A and 450 A classes with 1-1 moto sweeps. He is also the 2014 Production A class champion and runner-up in the 450 A class. The 450 A title was earned by "Factory" Sam Rowe, who finished second in the class and the Open A class at the final round. Rowe (RRR / Rage ATV / FTR / Motowoz / ITP) also won the Open A class title. Megan Manshack capped her championship season with another 1-1 moto sweep in the Women's class and her best finish in the 450 B ranks, taking second overall. Haedyn Mickelson (RRR / ITP) won the 450 B class and took third in Open B. Westley Wolfe (Greg's ATV / ITP) notched two wins at Loretta's, taking the top podium spot in both the Schoolboy Sr. (14-17) and Schoolboy Jr. Open (13-15) classes. Noah Mickelson won the Super Mini (12-15) class for the third time in 2014 to ensure he would go home with the No. 1 plate and class championship.

Walker Fowler Captures Second Straight Victory at Round 8 of the AMSOIL GNCC Series

6/26/2014

MILLFIELD, Ohio (June 8, 2014) - The 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship, hosted the 25th running of the Wiseco John Penton GNCC on Saturday from Millfield, Ohio. In a dominant fashion, N-Fab AmPro Yamaha's Walker Fowler captured his second straight victory in the XC1 Pro Class, while his teammate Cole Richardson made it three-in-a-row in the XC2 Pro Am Class.

RacingPowersports.com/CST Tires/PirateMX.com's Adam McGill got off to a great start after grabbing the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award, leading the field of XC1 Pro riders into the first lap. Fowler stole the lead away on the opening lap and the duo diced it out for the lead position early on.

McGill took over the lead on the second lap, where he opted to pit for fuel, while Fowler chose to fly past his pits and into the lead. The rest of the front-runners joined McGill in pitting on lap two, allowing Fowler to break away out front.

Coming off a DNF at the previous round due to mechanical issues, Precision/Maxxis Tires Chris Bithell headed into round eight with vengeance. Bithell put himself into a favorable position right away as he tucked in behind the duo of Fowler and McGill up front. The Pennsylvania native entered a battle with McGill around mid-race, eventually making the pass for second on lap three.

Bithell was poised to take a podium finish at The Penton until he ran into mechanical issues Photo: HillFowler began to pull away in the final moments, where he finished almost two minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Adam McGill.

Meanwhile, five-time GNCC Champion Chris Borich had to pick his way through the pack from an uncharacteristic start outside the top five. Borich quickly moved his way into fourth but the Team Maxxis rider began losing time from there. On the final lap, Borich succumbed to a mechanical issue that began affecting his machine after the mid-way point. Borich was forced to receive a tow back to his pit area, where he was unable to finish the race.

Jarrod McClure captured his second podium finish of the season Photo: HillJust as Borich arrived to his pit area, reports surfaced that Bithell, too, was experiencing mechanical issues. It was a tough break for Bithell, who was running in the second place position, as his day ended before the checkered flag once again.

Amidst all the chaos on the final lap, DWT Racing's Jarrod McClure continued to ride a solid pace as he had done all afternoon. McClure maintained a fifth place position throughout the two-hour race, but the Pennsylvania native was the one to capitalize on the mechanical issues ahead, where he jumped two positions from fifth to third place on the final lap.

Round eight marks McClure's second podium finish for the season, where he now holds fourth overall in the championship standings.

Fowler has closed the points gap to only 8 behind Borich in the championship standings Photo: HillDave Bayless Motorsports/Dirtworks/DC Cycles Brycen Neal put forth another impressive ride in his rookie XC1 season, finishing fourth overall for the day in his home state of Ohio. Neal sits in seventh place in the championship standings after eight rounds of racing.

N-Fab AmPro Yamaha's Cole Richardson made the XC2 Pro Am championship points chase a little more exciting after capturing the round eight victory to bring the points tally to a tie with closest competitor and fellow rookie Marshal Goings. Richardson's stellar performance was enough to land himself a fifth place overall for the day, followed by GT-Thunder's Brian Wolf who finished sixth overall.

XC1 Podium: (left) Adam McGill, Walker Fowler, (right) Jarrod McClure Photo: HillWest Virginia's Brent Sturdivant finished seventh overall for the day, while GT Thunder/Maxxis/Howser Racing's Josh Merritt came in eighth, followed by SICC Racing's Marshal Goings in ninth from the XC2 Class, and Waynesburg Yamaha/GT Thunder/GBC-backed Jeff Pickens rounded out the top ten overall.

BNR Motorsports/Loctite's Kevin Yoho secured 10th place in the XC1 Class and 11th overall, while Ohio's very own Braden Henthorn scored 9th place in the XC1 Class and 12th overall in his return to racing after a recent jaw surgery.

Fowler's second straight victory in the XC1 Pro Class, along with Borich's misfortune at round eight, brings the Ohio native to within eight points of Borich's lead in the championship standings. With five rounds remaining in 2014, Fowler has entered himself into a head-to-head battle with the five-time champion for the first time in recent history.

XC2 Pro Am Podium: (left) Marshal Goings, Cole Richardson, (right) Marty Christofferson Photo: HillIn the XC2 Pro Am division, Richardson led the two-hour race from flag to flag, capturing his fifth victory of the season. SICC Racing/Maxxis Tires-backed Goings put up a fight throughout the first half of the afternoon, but in the end Richardson's fast-pace was untouchable. Goings took second place for the day, where he and Richardson sit tied with 200 points in the first place position.

New York's Marty Christofferson continued his consistent streak atop the podium with yet another third place finish in the XC2 Class. Christofferson got off to a top five start and maintained a solid third place position all afternoon. Christofferson continues to hold third place in the championship standings after eight rounds of racing.

West Virginia's James Green captured the $100 All Balls Racing XC2 Pro Am Holeshot Award and ultimately finished 8th place for the day Photo: Hill
It was another good day for Ohio native Blake Tornes, who captured the College A (16-21) Class victory, as well as the Top Amateur honors with 16th overall.

For the first time this season, the 10 a.m. overall podium was swept by the young guns of the Schoolboy (13-15) A/B division, where Ohio's Cody Collier secured his fourth straight $125 GT Thunder Amateur Overall at the John Penton. Collier was joined by his closest competitor in the class, as well as for the overall win, Westley Wolfe. Wolfe has been plagued by bad luck this season but the Maryland native was able to land a solid second place finish. Multi-time GNCC Champion in the Youth ranks, Hunter Hart, made his second career appearance on the overall podium with a third place finish for the day.

Blake Tornes captured the Top Amateur AwardPhoto: HillIt was another exciting battle in the 4x4 Pro Class as West Virginia's Bryan Buckhannon emerged victorious after more than two hours of battle on the track. ATV Parts Plus/Can-Am's Buckhannon was joined atop the podium by Can-Am X-Team's Kevin Trantham and his teammate Jordan Phillips, who rounded out the 4x4 podium with third place in the class. BNR Motorsports/Loctite/Can-Am rider Rob Smith finished fourth in the class and Factory Polaris/Coldcock Whiskey's Rick Cecco rounded out the top five for the day.

4x4 Pro: (left) Kevin Trantham, Bryan Buckhannon, (right) Jordan Phillips Photo: HillAfter eight rounds of racing, Trantham holds the points lead in the 4x4 Pro Class with three wins behind him, while Buckhannon holds strong in second with two wins and Rob Smith sits back in the third place position.

Saturday afternoon saw round four of the six-race Side-by-Side championship where the state of Ohio once again proved tough as two of the three podium finishers hail from the Buckeye state. With Kyle Chaney behind the wheel, team Can-Am/Chaney Racing battled it out early on with fellow Can-Am driver Tim Farr and his JB Offroad 41 team. Chaney eventually made the move on the JB Offroad 41 team to take over the lead and he didn't look back from there.

Cody Collier claimed yet another GT Thunder Top Amateur Overall Award Photo: HillTeam Crash Addict PARCS Can-Am put in a career-best second place finish with an impressive come-from-behind performance from a fifth row start. Led by Treavis Poynter, the team made up seven positions throughout the one-hour race, finishing less than one second behind the leaders.

Team Can-Am/Chaney Racing holds the XC1 Modified points leadPhoto: HillIt was nearly a photo-finish between teammates Polaris National Guard, led by William Yokley, and Coastal National Guard's Scott Kiger as the duo battled into the final corners of the Sunday Creek Motocross track. While leading, Kiger got hung up in one of the final sections and Yokley cruised past to secure the final podium position for the day.

JB Off-Road Can-Am 41 sits in third, with Big Country Powersports/Polaris in fourth and Polaris National Guard rounds out the top five in points.

Florida native Brandon Frazier secured his seventh Youth overall of the season where he claimed yet another 90 Open (12-15) victory. Frazier was joined by Pennsylvania's Tim Sroka in second place and West Virginia's Carter Kerens rounded out the overall podium with third place.

Wienen Edges Out Natalie in Georgia ATVMX Season Opener

4/20/2012

Picture
The 2012 AMA ATV Motocross National Championship
Series kicked off Saturday
at  Aonia Pass MX Park in Washington, Ga., providing
some of the best
racing in  series history, pitting the fastest ATV Motocross
racers in the
country against  one another for two twenty-plus minute motos.
After an
eight-month hiatus from  racing due to a season ending injury in 2011,

Wienen  Motorsports/SSi/Walsh/Yamaha-backed Chad Wienen began the season in a

winning  fashion, going (1-1) for the overall and the early points lead.In
the opening moto of the Pro ATVMX class,
it  was Baldwin Motorports/PEP's
Josh Upperman who grabbed the SSi Decals
Holeshot  Award and led the early
part of the race. It wasn't long before Wienen
powered  his new Yamaha ride
into the lead, though, passing Upperman through the
  fan-filled finish line
section.

While the rest of the
  field
was viewing the track on the site lap, Motoworks/Can-Am's newest
addition,
Joel Hetrick, was waiting behind the gate while his crew worked to
fix a
mechanical issue on the ATV. Earlier in the day, Hetrick grabbed the ATVRiders.com fastest Qualifier Award over a

stacked  field of veteran riders, and after finally fixing the ATV in time for

the gate  drop, Hetrick proved it wasn't a fluke as he caught and passed
the
front-runners  and pressured Wienen for the lead spot. Hetrick finally
made a
bold attempt to  pass Wienen for the lead, but in doing so, the

nineteen-year-old went off the  track and was forced to sit the rest of the moto

on the sidelines.

Defending champion,
Motoworks/Can-Am's John
Natalie, came through the pack and spent a
majority of Moto 1 battling with
longtime competitor Josh Upperman for the
second place spot. Natalie finally
got  around Upperman in the latter part
of the initial twenty-minutes of racing,
and  although the "Ironman" put a
late charge on the leader as the two-lap card
came  out, Natalie wasn't
able to catch Wienen in time for the
checkers.

In
Moto 2, it was once again the Honda of
Josh  Upperman who took the SSi
Decals Holeshot Award, but the defending champ
Natalie  inched his way out
front right away, fending off a very driven duo of
Wienen and  Uppeman.
Pennsylvania's Derek Swartfager put his Waldo
Motorsports-backed Honda
inside the top five early in the moto, battling with
Thomas Brown on the
TBROWN  Yamaha powered by Moto-X-Perts machine. Brown led a
tight-pack of
riders who  were battling for the top five positions, including
pro class
rookie Mark Madl,  the 2011 Pro Am Production champion and fifth
fastest
qualifier for the  day.

Meanwhile, Natalie

and  Wienen combated back and fourth in an intense battle for lead. Wienen

chased  Natalie for most of the race, slipping past his former teammate in
a few
spots,  but the most famous line was through the whoop-section and
into the
final corner  before the finish, where Wienen showed his front
tires to the
leader several  times. On the final lap, Wienen made the move
on the defending
champ just one  turn before the finish line, giving Wienen
the overall win and
the points lead  after the first round of
racing.

"This is definitely a moment for
me right
now,"  Wienen said. "To come back like this and just being able to
walk and to
come out  here and do what I love, this is the greatest moment.
We're taking it
one race  at a time, super excited to start the season off
with a (1-1) sweep.
I've been  dreaming about this day (first race back
from injury) and it's
finally coming  on. This is going to be a story for
the books this
year."

Natalie
finished out
the day with second overall, while Josh Upperman took the final
podium
position  and third place in the championship points

standings.

"I didn't get tired out there
at all today,
just a couple issues there on the last lap not being able to
shift but we're
going to go back and fix it to be ready for round two,"
said Natalie. "I really
liked the track today but I like the rough and
tumble bumps, so I'm ready to go
to a rougher track where it really
separates the men from the boys."

"I've
really taken my
training program to another level this year and it's
starting to show," said
Upperman. "It's boosted my confidence a lot,
because I know what I can do now
from last year to this year and I'm ready
to make it happen."

Thomas Brown (YAM)

finished with a (4-5) score to take fourth overall, just ahead of rookie
Mark
Madl (HON), who took an impressive fifth overall in his first-ever
